“Life is a Gift” (the poppies blanket)

A friend invited me to create a blanket for a breast cancer fundraiser her town’s junior women’s league put on this spring (with proceeds going to the Susan G. Komen Foundation and to the local hospital). As I pondered what to make for it, these colorful poppies against their quiet background kept coming to my mind. Any difficult diagnosis brings some heaviness — that’s the gray-green background, like dark clouds. But it can also bring a change of outlook on life and life’s many gifts, ones we so easily take for granted. And those, of course, are the poppies. A tribute, too, to my sweet mom and my sweet mom-in-law, both of whom have battled breast cancer.

“Life is a Gift” (Size: 55″ x 73″)

This blanket has already gone to a good home.

  1. This is so beautiful! Do you have a tutorial for this? I have a bunch of old wool sweaters and some wool pants and skirts that belonged to my mother-in-law. I would love to make some blankets out of them for the family.

    • Hi! I have an online course, the Felted Wool Blanket Master Class, in which I thoroughly teach how to make a blanket “Green Sheep style.” I’d love to have you there! We have a Facebook group page for enrollees to share work, ask questions, etc. It’s fun. You can go to this link to learn more: https://joan-olson-blankets.teachable.com/p/felted-wool-blanket-masterclass/. You may also find the link on this blog page–scroll up to the top right where you’ll find an announcement and link to learn more. Let me know if you have more questions. –Joan
